چکیده

The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is widely used in solving structured convex optimization problems. Despite of its success in practice, the convergence properties of the standard ADMM for minimizing the sum of N (N ≥ 3) convex functions with N block variables linked by linear constraints, have remained unclear for a very long time. In this paper, we present convergence and convergence rate results for the standard ADMM applied to solve N -block (N ≥ 3) convex minimization problem, under the condition that one of these functions is convex (not necessarily strongly convex) and the other N − 1 functions are strongly convex. Specifically, in that case the ADMM is proven to converge with rate O(1/t) in a certain ergodic sense, and o(1/t) in non-ergodic sense, where t denotes the number of iterations.

On the Convergence of Multi-Block Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers and Block Coordinate Descent Method

The paper answers several open questions of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and the block coordinate descent (BCD) method that are now wildly used to solve large scale convex optimization problems in many fields. For ADMM, it is still lack of theoretical understanding of the algorithm when the objective function is not separable across the variables. In this paper, we ana...

Iteration Complexity Analysis of Multi-block ADMM for a Family of Convex Minimization Without Strong Convexity

The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is widely used in solving structuredconvex optimization problems due to its superior practical performance. On the theoretical sidehowever, a counterexample was shown in [7] indicating that the multi-block ADMM for minimizingthe sum of N (N ≥ 3) convex functions with N block variables linked by linear constraints maydive...

Randomized Primal-Dual Proximal Block Coordinate Updates

In this paper we propose a randomized primal-dual proximal block coordinate updatingframework for a general multi-block convex optimization model with coupled objective functionand linear constraints. Assuming mere convexity, we establish its O(1/t) convergence rate interms of the objective value and feasibility measure. The framework includes several existingalgorithms as s...

On the Q-linear Convergence of a Majorized Proximal ADMM for Convex Composite Programming and Its Applications to Regularized Logistic Regression

This paper aims to study the convergence rate of a majorized alternating direction method of multiplier with indefinite proximal terms (iPADMM) for solving linearly constrained convex composite optimization problems. We establish the Q-linear rate convergence theorem for 2-block majorized iPADMM under mild conditions. Based on this result, the convergence rate analysis of symmetric Gaussian-Sei...

Recently, Chen et al. [4] provided a counterexample show...
